if you are at an overseas base not in a combat zone ( japan, germany, england for example) you get extra pay called COLA (cost of living allowance) it is based on the average of the exchange rate each month and also on your rank and number of dependents. im currently in japan with the AF (and have been for 3 years) my husband is an E5 and it has went anywhere from $400-800 a month. BUT although things are the same as US prices on base you are very limited in your choices so have to do alot of buying offbase and things are more expensive....also in japan you not only have to have reg insurance on a vehicle but also pay road tax ( $75-200 a year depending on vehicle) and every 2 years you pay JCI ( an extra insurance that you pay the government for...runs about $500-600 for JCI and inspection) so really you arent getting any extra in the end, also depending on the base its really hard to get permission to live off base in japan so BAH is out....and if you do get BAH you are givin a max amount they will pay and you show them your lease and utilities and they pay you exactly that much (unlike the states where you get a set amount) the reason for this is a one bedroom apt off base here is aroun $1200 a month for rent. the one thing you do get at an overseas base is that all health and dental care is done on base for the whole family. we have saved quite a bit since being here but its because we dont have a car payment here it has nothing to do with the pay.Being deployed to a country across the world will earn you mor emoney?
I think the only way you'll make more money in Japan is if the BAH is higher.





Deploy to Iraq or Afghanistan and you get extra money and it's tax free.
You can get more money. Cost of living allowance is nice, especially when you shop on base. Also you get extra money for being out of the country. ( I believe that is service-wide? Not just Navy?) Sometimes you can get Assignment incentive pay, an extra amount of money for going somewhere that no one else wanted.. Lots of opportunities to make a little extra, especially if you live on base. No bills.
Yes and no. Here's the deal with that... it is NOT like being deployed to war zone. You don't get hazard pay unless you are in a hazard (war) zone. BUT, you can make money simply by not having to spend money. When you are deployed you get more benefits (medical for instance) where you have little to nothing out of pocket. If you eat on base, sleep on base or take the housing allowance and get a lower cost housing, then yes, you can actually make more money (spendable money if that makes sense). But your actual ';Pay'; will not change, just all the allowances go up. Besides that you'll get to see places you would never see otherwise.
more then likely..... I'm in the military .... its just like being deployed over seas to Iraq...
Only if you have a title or degree, like doctor or nurse.

the military isn't all the commercials make it out to be.

I doubt it. Your cost of living would be higher so you'd be compensated for that but you usually have to go on a hardship or combat tour to get the juicy tax-free dollars padding your check.
