Because its not worth anthing, You may think that if this is the case then we would run out of money, but it only costs something like 19p to make a 5 pound note, and the same for 10, 20's, and 50's.
becos nothing comes cheap or free in life, even money!
because unfortunately they arent cost effective to produce....but trying to phase a significant part of the currency like that is difficult. If you think about it.....even though they are expensive against their worth we need them in circulation. We use them everyday.
You try to make something that can handle the wear and tear and coin has to take for less than a penny.
